The Right to Freedom of Expression and Its Regulations from the Perspective of Islam

Abstract

The right to freedom of expression is one of the fundamental and controversial issues in contemporary societies, and it holds a special place in Islam as well. This right allows individuals to express their opinions and views freely; however, it is subject to certain restrictions in light of religious and social principles. The present study aims to examine the concept and regulations of freedom of expression from the perspective of Islam. This issue is of particular importance, as a correct understanding of this right within the framework of Islamic teachings can help clarify its conditions and limitations in an Islamic society. The main objective of the study is to explain the concept of freedom of expression in Islam and to elucidate its regulations in accordance with religious, social, and ethical principles. The central research questions include: What is the concept of freedom of expression in Islam? What are its limitations? And how does it relate to the principles of enjoining good and forbidding evil? This study employs a descriptive-analytical method, relying on library sources and conducting a content analysis of religious texts, jurisprudential references, and works by contemporary scholars. The findings indicate that freedom of expression is recognized in Islam as a fundamental right; however, it is framed by boundaries that prioritize public interest, social order, and ethical conduct. The study emphasizes that freedom of expression in Islam functions as a means for social reform, the promotion of virtue, and the prevention of vice.
