Diplomacy Clinics: Opportunities and Challenges in Afghanistan

Diplomacy clinics, aiming to enhance knowledge and practical skills, provide a platform for learning, dialogue, and experiential engagement in diplomacy. By bridging theory and practice, these clinics align with the mission of third-generation universities, familiarizing students with real-world diplomatic challenges and preparing them for the job market. The main research question of this study is: What are the key opportunities and challenges facing diplomacy clinics in Afghanistan? This study employed an analytical approach using both library-based and field data. The statistical population included higher education, diplomatic, and consular institutions in Herat—comprising 30 institutions. A total of 303 questionnaires were distributed and collected, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 experts. The qualitative data were analyzed accordingly. The findings indicate that diplomacy clinics offer opportunities, including practice-based training, consultancy services, scientific research, and simulation exercises in the field of international relations. However, they also face major challenges, including limited financial, administrative, and human resources, as well as a lack of sustained institutional support.
